San Fernando Cathedral (prior to 1800's addition) was founded in 1731 by a group of 15 families who came from the Canary Islands at the invitation of King Phillip V of Spain.

NATCHITICHES CONNECTION: November 17, 1779 register entry as to the burial of ATHANASE DE MEZIERES: "Micieres, Atanacio de Lt. Col. Comander of Nachitoches, Luisiana, Knight of the order of St. Luis, widower from his second wife, Peagia Fazentes." Register entry found for me by NPS volunteer Robert Garcia who noted that the priest at that time did not always maintain his spelling.
Robert Garcia had followed up for me on the entry in Immaculate Conception's register which referenced the burial there.
Dr. Herbert Bolton also had found where De Meziere had been appointed as governor of Spain's Texas but died before taking office.
