“Grand Unveiling” of 2008 Christmas Ornaments Holiday Season

Mid- October through Christmas: Early inspiration for this season’s celebrations can be found at the gallery’s “Grand Unveiling” of the 2008 Christmas Ornaments created by Art Guild members.

Children’s Christmas Ornament Painting November 22
Natchitoches Art Guild and Gallery, Cane River National Heritage Area & Cane River Creole National Historical Park

Children of all ages are invited to create their own Christmas tree ornaments at this free event on the downtown riverbank from Noon until 4:00 p.m.

original handcrafted and hand-painted Christmas ornaments.

“Christmas by Candlelight” Month of December

This annual “Christmas by Candlelight” tour features uniquely decorated homes in the Natchitoches Historic District. The event consists of three separate tours:
Tour 1: Wednesdays, December 10 and 17 (5-8 p.m.)
Chez des Amis and Samuel Guy Houses
Tour 2: Fridays, December 12 and 19 (5-8 p.m.)
Prud’homme Rouquier, La Louisiane, Cane River Townhouse
Tour 3: Saturdays, December 13 and 20 (1-4 p.m.)
Lemee House, Cunningham Cottage, Bishop Martin Museum, Cunningham Law Office.

Christmas at Melrose Plantation Month of December

12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Enjoy a holiday tour of historic Melrose Plantation, grandly decorated for the season. Melrose features several structures including the Main House, Yucca House, and African House. The property once served as an artist colony for authors such as Lyle Saxon and William Faulkner. It also houses the work of self-taught artist Clementine Hunter. Open daily except closed on Mondays and major holidays.

Motor down the picturesque lower Cane River Lake heritage byways at nighttime to see a beautiful array of Christmas lights and decorations throughout the Holiday Season. Historic Creole homes display traditional Christmas lighting and decorations along the scenic river route.

Christmas on the Plantation Saturday, December 13

1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Enjoy Holiday music and wander through this historic site. This special Christmas event spotlights the importance of agriculture to the community and its economy. Area farmers will allow visitors an “up-close and personal” look at machinery used in farming the fertile landscape around Magnolia Plantation. Sing-a-long with holiday music performed by the locally renowned Detention Center Choir near the plantation store or try your hand at creating Christmas decorations such as popcorn strings, paper-rings, and pecan ornaments. Park activities will be held rain or shine outdoors near the visitors’ entrance, so please dress appropriately. Free Event. Call the rangers at 318.356.8441 for more information.

Cane River Creole Christmas Saturday, December 20
The Badin-Roque House

12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m. Travel downriver for a special tour of this restored poteaux-en-terre (posts in ground) Creole style house. Enjoy special tours, holiday stories and video of the history of this historic site. The Badin-Roque House is one of only five of its kind remaining in the United States. Listen and join in as Christmas stories about “Isle Brevelle” are recalled by your Creole guide. Weather permitting; special holiday “goodies” will be sold at the site the day of the event. All proceeds go to benefit St. Augustine Historical Society restoration efforts. Call 318.357.6658 for more information.

1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Enjoy the soulful performance of the Hardrick Rivers
Revue while you try your hand at creating Christmas decorations such as popcorn strings, paper-rings, and pecan ornaments. This event will highlight the park’s Junior Ranger program by hosting a jam session engaging holiday visitors with the music. Bring your musical instruments or use the park’s African drums to “jam with the band”. Park activities will be held rain or shine outdoors at the pavilion near the visitors’ entrance, so please dress appropriately. Free Event. Call the rangers at 318.356.8441 for more information.
