Great fun was had by all at the 2009 National Night Out. I've loaded 13 photos on this site for you to see what you missed. Mayor Wayne McCullen, Councilman Jack McCain, and CASA Director Angela Anthony addressed the crowd throughout the night. State Representative Rick Nowlin visited with neighbors. Also seen at the event were Natchitoches Police Chief Mickey Dove and officer Ross, the new city police officer assigned to the historic district. Joey the Clown entertained both young and old. We w…

Where does your drinking water come from?
Sibley Lake is the surface water source for City of Natchitoches Drinking Water. This water is treated then provided to your tap. While water treatment removes most contaminants, it is important to keep pollution, chemicals, and contaminants out of the watershed that flows to Sibley Lake.
Why is it important to protect your drinking water?
A person can survive without food for more than a month, but less than a week without water! You and…

Tommy Whitehead forwarded me a report from the Kappa Alpha Fraternity House. They report that the suspect in the April 4 rape on Second Street was caught breaking into a vehicle in the KA parking lot. They indicate that two active members spotted the suspect attempting to remove a stereo system from a member's car. Active, Bart Robinson, had enough sense to immediately dial 911. While waiting for the police, other members engaged the suspect in conversation. The Natchitoches Historic District Ho…

I verified with Sandra at the Planning & Zoning commission that Mr. Daryn Clark has withdrawn his application (that requested rezoning for the Pine Street house) from the city council meeting. This means that the issue is dead and we do not need to attend the City Council meeting tonight regarding this property. We thank Mr. Clark for his understanding, and wish him every success in finding a new location for his business offices. If anyone has recommendations for him, please do not hesitate…

I just returned from the Zoning & Planning meeting and wanted to say thank you to all of the homeowners who showed up and voiced their opinions regarding the zoning of the single family home on Pine Street. I appreciate the many people who took time to speak up. The application to rezone the Pine Street home was denied based on traffic and parking issues. Additionally the commission supported the homeowners association efforts to downzone the district.
I appreciate Mr. Clark and his busines…

I learned yesterday of a second issue on the planning & zoning agenda. It seems that the owners of the All-in-motion business at the corner of Amulet and Second Street (across from Mason Salter's) is requesting a zoning change from B2 to B3 to operate a car wash detailing business. This means that a B3 business opens up many, many more business opportunities for the site. It can be a 24 hour convenience store, a gas station, etc. Most importantly it means being open after normal business hou…

Daryn Clark is considering purchase of the pink Victorian at 207 Pine Street for use as a administrative office for a healthcare attendant business. This lovely single family home is being considered for rezoning from R-1 to R-1 special exception. The business also requests a zoning variance for off street parking. The Natchitoches Historic District Homeowners Association is opposed to the rezoning. This is not the appropriate location for such a business and I strongly urge you to attend the Zo…

National Night Out in the Historic District was the most successful to date. The community and law enforcement partnership emphasized getting to know neighbors and stopping crime. More than 60 participants enjoyed good food, good times, and great entertainment. Joey the Clown was the hit of the evening. He captured the neighbors attention with ventriloquism, juggling, and general clowning around. On hand at this successful event were Mayor Wayne McCullen, Police Chief Larry Vaughn, Councilman Da…

As I write, I am watching storm clouds from Hurricane Edouard spin our way. Plans for National Night Out are finalized and we are counting down to the evening. Tonight’s event includes activities for children – coloring, games, and a clown. We will unveil the latest design for a new park to be located at Pine and Cypress. Opportunities to meet with neighbors and city officials abound. I hope you’ll join us. Special thanks go to Rita Brockbank, Betty Durham, Vade Gordon, and Paul Gordon for servi…

The Natchitoches Historic District Homeowners Association will unveil a new design for the Historic District park, planned at the corner of Rue Pine, Rue Cypress, and Rue Percy. Plans will be unveiled at the national night out block party on Rue Poete, August 5, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Discussions of a park for this site have been on-going for more than six years.
