Cane River National Heritage Area Nominated for Top 50 for 50+ Initiative
Online voting for favorite places open through November 15, 2009
Natchitoches, LA – Cane River National Heritage Area (CRNHA) has been nominated for the Top 50 for 50+ initiative unveiled earlier this month by Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu. This new initiative celebrates the places and programs that make Louisiana an exciting and unique destination for the 50+ population. Over 800 nominations were received, with the CRNHA being selected as one of the top 200 nominations in the
Best Places to Enjoy the Outdoors and
Best Places to Visit with the Kids/Grandkids categories.
“The heritage area commission and its partners are honored to have this recognition bestowed upon the area,” remarked Cynthia Sutton, executive director of the CRNHA Commission. “The rich history of the area coupled with our unique blend of cultures and outdoor recreation opportunities makes the heritage area a treasured experience for both residents and visitors.”
The competition for being named to the top 50 favorite places is still underway with online voting running through November 15. People 50 and older are eligible to vote for their favorite Louisiana places in ten categories through
www.EncoreLouisiana.com. Encore Louisiana – The Official Guide to Louisiana Living for Boomers and Beyond was introduced by Lieutenant Governor on October 1, 2009 alongside the Top 50 for 50+ initiative. The top 50 winners will be announced in December.

Cane River National Heritage Area (CRNHA) includes the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District and extends 35-miles along both sides of Cane River Lake. The core of the area is an 116,000-acre district between Interstate 49 and the Red River, which includes most of the historic sites connected to the history of the region. Home to Cane River Creole National Historical Park, seven National Historic Landmarks, three state parks, and many other special places, CRNHA is a place to experience the rich cultures that developed from Louisiana’s colorful past.
